Parents, when you think about readiness for Back-to-School it is important to consider yourself in the process. After all, you are making some important decisions that can have a lasting impact on your child's future so managing any parental-stress should be ranked high on to-do-list.
Consider using our "Back-To-School Mental Wellness Checklist to promote a well parent, child and family throughout the school year:
1. Establish a Routine
Set regular sleep and wake-up times: in a busy and fast-paced world, this should occur at least 4 times per week.
Plan daily activities, including homework, meals, and relaxation: we know homework is not up for discussion, right?! And neither should taking rest. Your child and teen's brain and body needs moments to restore and rejuvenate and so do you. Be as intentional with homework as you are with relaxation.
Create a morning routine to reduce stress before school: this may include practicing deep breaths, reading a positive affirmation, or spiritual practices
2. Organize Your Space
Keep the study area tidy and clutter-free: For those living in small spaces organization is still possible; remember to keep pertinent tools in view and in reach.
Gather school supplies and keep them organized.
Create a designated space for relaxation and downtime: there's that word again, "relax", yes! it doesn't have to be a space with lit candles and infused oils but it should offer you an opportunity to take a break and relax.
3. Stay Connected
Reach out to friends before school starts to reconnect: This is for parents too.
Encourage your adolescent child to join a club, enroll your middle-schooler in a afterschool activity, and parents, join a book club or other social club that interests you.
4. Set Realistic Expectations
Accept that it's okay to have good and bad days: "it is okay, to not be okay"
Focus on progress, not perfection.
Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
5. Create a Wellness Plan
Identify early warning signs of your child or teen's intense emotions: use my "7 day Family Mindfulness Journal: mindfulness tool for a well child"
Connect them with a mental health professional or school counselor for ongoing support outside of home.
Identify important school staff for your child to contact in the event of a medical emergency, that includes mental health too.
Use this back-to-school mental wellness checklist as a guide, and tailor it to suit your family's individuality by taking a holistic approach.
